Melbourne Fringe 2008 is here
Today marked the launch of the 2008 Melbourne Fringe Festival at Trades Hall in Carlton. This year we worked with new team to develop an image campaign that draws upon the audience to devise a mask and develop an alter ego. Again XYZ has developed an excellent TVC for the season, watch Channel 10 in the coming weeks. Thanks again to the all the staff at Fringe for allowing us to create this outcome.

Paper promos that push it…
Craig Dunn sent us some additional nostalgia… clearing one archive and happily filling up another.
‘Limited budget, miracle worker’ poster was printed by Rawson Graphics for a paper called Threads by Dalton Paper. This single poster was part of series developed by Daltons, that explored a range of controversual topics. The miracle worker concept was released post the September 11 attack, and was devised by Sydney based creative outfit – By Radio, that has since closed shop.
Have paper promotions since reached such risky heights? Where are the logos? Loving the scale. What has the whole baby line got to do with paper?

Making the Green House by Joost

The studio is working with Joost to produce a brand and communication materials to accompany a project/event planned for Federation Square over November, December, January 2009 called the Green House.
Joost has a distinctive handwriting style and it is often used to communicate aspects of Joost’s work. Joost is a live wire – always making or doing, assembling or breaking down a string of projects. We managed to hold him down for a few minutes, then we armed him with a juicy pen and paper and asked him to write.
We then assembled the writing samples into a house graphic encapsulated the text. The house graphic will also be used a directional device and marker. The composition and form had the potential to be symetrical, or lined up. However we felt that an ordered, yet wayward composition best represents Joost’s artful and formal approach to making work. Say tuned for more information soon…
In 24 hours; from design brief through to going live, we assembled this holding page and stage 02 web scheme for Greenhouse’s web presence, an information based site is being finalised. Thanks to Lee at Irrepressible Wonton for putting it together so quickly. The Greenhouse has a unique menu by Shannon Bennett from Vue de Monde, which Earl Carter photographed.

More to come soon…
Comment?Spring at Pearl

Pearl Café in Richmond asked the studio to provide an image for their spring menu.
During the winter months the signs of spring are few. That is until the bare branches of the ornamental plum trees, that line many streets in Melbourne, show signs in in early August, now late July, that spring is near – clear skies on a brisk morning walk to work are greeted with bursts of white and shades of pink. It seems fitting to share this sight with the patrons of Pearl.

Comment?The signing artscape…

Jonno from Something Splendid wrote to Nowality:
I’m writing because I have a question about large typography in Melbourne; and I figure that if anyone knows the answer it would be you. There has been erected on some factory roof on the north side of the Yarra, between Punt and Church, a rainbow arc of illuminated type proclaiming “OUR WONDERFUL HOUR” (I think it said that, my memory is horrible.)
Is this something you can shed any light on at all?
Hi Jonno, we have noticed this little guy a few weeks ago too. We hear through the grape vine that it is an art piece and we have been too busy smashing out the 2008 Melbourne Fringe programme to do a little reporting – as reporting these projects is what this journal is all about.
A little digging today found that it is a piece from Ms Naomi Milgrom’s (Group Managing Director of the Sussan Fashion group) art collection and stands on the rooftop of new headquarters The Sussan Group in Cremorne (Cremorne is a small industrial suburb lined by Punt Road, The Yarra River, Church Street and Swan Street).
The piece – Our Magic Hour – is by New York based artist Ugo Rondinone. From the Kaldor Art Project website – OUR MAGIC HOUR: the time is now, our moment together, when we step out of the ordinariness of every day existence and take centre stage…
The piece continues the visual dialogue of Cremorne and Richmond area with its icon large scale skyline signing. From the artistic statement it seems that the site also parodies the activity of large scale site branding and hoarding, as these old signs mostly serve the purposes of heritage, over advertising a brand. The piece can be best viewed at night traveling along the Citylink tollway (exiting the city), Alexandra Avenue (glimpses) – just watch the traffic if you are driving.
According to a source the new Sussan Group space has a gallery for Ms Milgrom’s collection. The gallery experience starts in the foyer with a work from American artist – Sol LeWitt.
Another amazing gift to our city and a wonderful gesture from Ms Milgrom, which contributes to the cultural fabric (pardon the pun) of the area, and the city.
There is a little more information at the vine.com.au (where we ripped this image from, we will be documenting soon).
Thank you Jonno for prompting us.
