The return to Australia after over 20 years in August of pop icon Paul Weller prompts days of too much homework, hormones running hot, high hopes, little money, 17% interest rates, the green house effect yes— global warming far away, a part time cook at Kentucky Fried Chicken. The debut LP Café Blue by the Style Council was a sound that fused jazz synthpop that split in two the fan base of Paul Weller — founding member of UK mod revival trio — The Jam and new romantic romp — The Style Council. What were you doing on the 21st or 22 of November in 1985? In Pennant Hills one was frying chicken while at the Horden Pavillon Mick and Paul played.

I find it hard to distill just how important these gifts from beyond were to us in the pre-media saturated 80′s. To be a 15yr old grain fed suburbanite and have this record land in our backyards was to experience some of the grander ideas of the 20th Century crooned into our consciousness by a skinny white English guy who wished he was Otis Redding. Early hip-hop, French cafe socialism, Thatcherism & more all on Side A.
Will the tickets be more than $22.50? I’ll need to pull a double shift on Sunday at the KFC…
