To market to market, this Sunday

The studio and Studio Round will have a stall at the Melbourne Design Market at the Federation Square Car Park this Sunday. In a design industry first the Studio will settle its competitive differences with fellow design studio – Studio Round, and share a market stall.

“Studio Pip and Co has agreed to not steal potential or existing clients that visit on the day” stated Round’s Rob Nudds at the daily Round press conference, “We have agreed to help Pip and Co with transactions – ten only during the day, and smile in a designer way at visitors also.” Nudds continued.

Studio Round will be selling it’s Hold All bag range, Studio Pip and Co will be selling cards, paper, badges and whatever it can get away with – it is rumored Pip and Co shares are on offer too.

In a statement released prior to this post Ashton stated – “To be aware and not alarmed. This situation is temporary, both studio’s will be bitter enemies again come Monday 9am.” He concluded — “that it is not healthy for the design profession to see eye-to-eye and I am keen to have egg on my face to make this point clear.”

When prompted by Ashton’s statement, Vince Frost poked his tongue out and threw in a three fingered hand gesture (the bird in brackets) as a show of support.

See you all this Sunday

Signs of the times – photographic stills

Simon Pemberton, designer, educator, past National President of AGDA, has embarked on putting together a documentary of thirteen designers who shaped the graphic design profession in Australia. During 9-10 May 2008, Ken Cato, Mimmo Cozzolino, Garry Emery, Trevor Flett, Myriam Kin-Yee, David Lancashire, John Nowland, Brian Sadgrove, John Spatchurst, Neil Turner and Harry Williamson spent two days in Melbourne exploring their work, influences, and thoughts of the past, present and future. (Ian Kidd and Barrie Tucker were later filmed in Adelaide).

The filming has been supported by Swinburne University Film and Television School and the still photography by David Pidgeon and Andrew Ashton. The project is in need of financial support for the production of the final documentary and book. If you would like to support this project, please email Simon Pemberton at simon@graffiti.net.au

These stills were shot in low light at Lynch’s restaurant in South Yarra. Rather than formal portraits a voyeuristic approach seemed appropriate. The dining room was terrific – rich textures, mirrors, a crackling fire, velvet, high ceiling, a hostess and dim smoky light presented a curious collection of people in an engaging, honest and strange light.

Interact with the studio at AGIdeas

Design week initiated by the long running AGIdea’s conference in Melbourne held in late April. AGideas is presents 44 internationally acclaimed creative people from the UK, Netherlands, France, Italy, New Zealand, USA, Spain, China and Australia. 4 Days, 8 Distinct Events, 44 Internationally Acclaimed Creative People, 4000 People.

There are many events that surround the three day conference, speakers, business breakfasts, exhibitions and dinners. Interact is a night where students can elect to visit a studio of choice in the evening after the conference. We had nine students join us, that we spoiled with pizza from Mr Wolf and beverages for Batch. We leave the speeches to speakers to turn the microphone, so to speak, to visiting students and facilitate a talk fest.

The Studio attended the conference, highlights included presentations for Italian illustrator Sara Fanelli, interactive image designers United Visual Artists, image maker Patrick Thomas, designers Matthew Rhemphrey, Danny Yount and Anette Lenz.

Thanks again to AGIdeas for including the studio in its eighth year of participation.
